Presentation of ESFRI research infrastructures in social sciences, humanities and cultural heritage: engines of innovation for research in Italy and Europe

The Dipartimento Scienze Umane e Sociali, Patrimonio Culturale (DSU) of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) is organising a two-day event focusing on European Research Infrastructures and the new Italian thematic networks in the field of Social Sciences, Humanities and Cultural Heritage.

On 22 and 23 January 2025, a conference will be held at the CNR headquarters in Rome, dedicated to the ‘Presentation of European Research Infrastructures and the new Italian thematic networks in the field of Social, Human and Heritage Sciences’. The conference aims to support research excellence at national and European level by promoting the development of open, integrated and innovation- and technology-transfer-oriented research systems.

The DSU is responsible for coordinating the CNR’s involvement with the primary European research infrastructures outlined in the ESFRI Roadmap (European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures) and the National Research Infrastructure Plan (PNIR) for the Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) sector. European Research Infrastructures in the SSH domain hold significant strategic importance as they facilitate access to advanced facilities, expertise, resources, tools, data, and services, making them available to relevant scientific communities and key stakeholders. These include universities, public institutions, policy makers, companies, trade associations, cultural bodies and the third sector. The common goal is to foster advanced research, higher education, technology transfer and knowledge sharing, in line with the principles of Open Science and Open Innovation.

Participation Guidelines
Attendance at the conference is complimentary for those who have registered via the form. Alternatively, the conference can be viewed via streaming on the days and times indicated in the programme.

The two-day event will provide a valuable opportunity to define shared strategies and synergic interventions aimed at enhancing the dissemination, accessibility and use of the services offered by the research infrastructures and the PNRR clusters (H2IOSC and FOSSR). These interventions will be presented by companies, public bodies, associations and third sector operators working in the field of social sciences, humanities and cultural heritage.

On 22 January 2025, the DARIAH, CLARIN, E-RIHS, OPERAS, RESILIENCE infrastructures and the H2IOSC – Humanities and cultural heritage Italian Open Science Cloud cluster funded by the European Union NextGenerationEU – PNRR M4C2 to support the digital transition in the humanities and cultural heritage sciences will be presented.

On 23 January 2025, the focus will shift to Social Sciences, with the presentation of the CESSDA, RISIS, SHARE, GGP, GUIDE infrastructures, which offer advanced tools and resources for research and innovation in this field, and the FOSSR – Fostering Open Science in Social Science Research thematic network funded by the European Union NextGenerationEU.

The proceedings will commence with greetings from the President of the CNR, Maria Chiara Carrozza, and the Director of the DSU, Salvatore Capasso. This will be followed by presentations by the coordinators of the individual Research Infrastructures and the coordinators of the PNRR cluster projects. On the second day, Patrizio Bianchi, Economist and former Minister of Education, University and Research, will be speaking.

During both mornings, there will be a discussion open to the public on strategies for using and accessing research infrastructures.

The afternoons will be devoted to thematic tables by invitation, divided by areas of interest, to promote targeted dialogues on the shared development, openness and improvement of the services offered by PNRR infrastructures and clusters.

Tito Boeri, Economist and former President of the Istituto Nazionale della Previdenza Sociale (INPS), is also expected to participate in the working tables on the second day.
A wide range of representatives from the relevant scientific communities, public administration, business and the world of associations are expected to attend.
