Date: 16-17 March 2026
Venue: University of Macerata, Department of Humanities
Attendees: students and participants in the Latin Grammar course (a.y. 2025/26)
Seminar curated by: Dr. Federico Boschetti (CNR ILC, Pisa)
The University of Macerata is hosting the second edition of the seminar-workshop dedicated to the fundamentals of Digital Humanities and the application of Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) technologies for manuscript studies.
The seminar-workshop “Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) with eScriptorium and Transkribus: Theory and Practice on Virgil’s Manuscript Tradition” is curated and led by Dr. Federico Boschetti (CNR ILC, Pisa), in collaboration with CLARIN‑IT and within the framework of the digital services provided by the H2IOSC Cluster, where eScriptorium is one of the advanced resources supporting computational research in the humanities.

Designed for students attending the Latin Grammar course, the workshop, organised by Prof. Francesca Boldrer, introduces participants to the main methodologies and tools for automated text recognition, offering both theoretical foundations and hands‑on activities with real manuscript images. Through practical exercises and guided demonstrations, attendees will gain a clear understanding of how HTR can support philological research, manuscript studies, and broader Digital Humanities workflows.
The seminar aims to equip participants with essential skills to critically integrate digital tools into the study of classical texts, fostering methodological awareness and strengthening their ability to navigate digital research environments. By engaging with state-of-the-art technologies such as eScriptorium and Transkribus, students will explore the potential of AI‑assisted transcription and the challenges of working with historical documents in a digital ecosystem.
